Mac Mini in a Corvette

After our little scare with the Mac Mini last week, the little boxen that could is quickly becoming my favorite computer (still can’t wait to get one with Leopard on it). So seeing cool applications of it like this one thrills me to no end: Andrew sent us his writeup of putting a Mac Mini into a Corvette (complete with touchscreen monitor) as a music player.

Mac Mini in a Corvette

The whole process looks pretty complicated to me– the most I’ve done with my car stereo is install an old CD player, and by install I mean “watched my friend do it.” But Andrew’s writeup is really thorough, and he goes through everything from choosing components to creating a layout, to potential problems during installation, and what he plans to do next. Apparently the Mini is almost tailormade for car systems like this– not only is there a special cable built to power it in the car, but there is even a special version of Front Row designed to be controlled from a touchscreen. Not everything worked well, however– the Mini had a grounding problem, apparently, and Andrew had an issue with the Mini’s volume setting reverting after a restart, but he was able to punch out an Applescript to fix it.

The end product looks great– Andrew says he’s still working on the mounts, but considering he’s got a working touchscreen controlling a Mac Mini in his Corvette, that’s good enough for me. Very nice.

Skype comes to iPhone via IM+

Shape Services on Monday announced IM+ for Skype for iPhone, a Web application that enables iPhone users to access the Skype messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) network.

IM+ for Skype for iPhone follows the release of similar software for other mobile platforms like BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian and J2ME devices. The software taps in to your Skype account, enabling you to make voice calls using SkypeOut credits. The application works on any network, according to Shape, and doesn’t specifically require Wi-Fi.

Twitter HQ

Today I met up with Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter, and he gave me a desk, and I am allowed to stay at Twitter HQ for the rest of the day!

Biz is really an amazing guy, and so are all the employees at Twitter! Did I mention that everyone has an iPhone and a Mac at Twitter! I am really jealous!

Well, as the day goes by, more blog posts go, and my stay at Twitter shortens……..

Review: Mozilla Thunderbird

Over the past few weeks, I have started using Mozilla Thunderbird. The 2 main features that I use are, the email client of course, and a RSS Feed client. The reason I use the RSS Feed client is because when I use my email, I like to stay updated in the tech and in Apple news. Every minute, Mozilla Thunderbird updates the RSS Feed and retrieves data from that site! This makes my day a lot quicker and faster!

Along with the RSS Feed, it has a gmail client pre-configured so ll you have to do is type in the email address, and it does the rest! Especially if you have more than one gmail email account. I have my personal, and than I have my Apple Universe account come to one mail client along with all my RSS Feeds!

My Overall rating is: 4 out of 5
