Rumor: Apple event Sept. 5

Apple’s new line of iPods will indeed be introduced in September, in line with recent speculation and rumors. But contrary to the report provided by AppleInsider yesterday, the announcement will not be happening mid-to-late September. The company plans to drop the bomb on us with a major unveiling during the first week of September—specifically, September 5, according to our sources within the company. The fifth is odd day for an event (a Wednesday instead of the typical Tuesday), but we are told that the reason for this is the long holiday weekend. Whatever you say, your Steveness. It’s also possible that Apple will make announcements on the 5th while shipping later in the month, which would validate the date range provided by AI’s sources.

Our sources are slim on details for exactly what will be announced, but said that at least one of the things that will come out of September 5th will be a new iPod. When given a rundown of the AppleInsider report, they said that they weren’t clear on the minute details, but from what they do know, “it seems right.” So that said, let’s take a look at what AI wrote.

Four different models will be introduced next month, says AI, most of which will be NAND-flash-based and major evolutions of both the iPod video and iPod nano lines. Sources in the “far East” have allegedly seen fullscreen iPods that will have an OS that is based off of OS X. “What’s interesting, however, is that the Apple has also been working on Mac OS-based iPod software for models that will retain their click-wheels—such as third-generation iPod nanos,” writes Kasper Jade. “Interface concept videos recently published and then pulled from MacRumors consisted of genuine Apple material to this effect, AppleInsider can confirm.”

Tech Today: Don’t steal my Mac!

I hinted at it the other day and now I’ going to announce it n the site. My friend Daniel, from Apple Universe, and I have started our own podcast. Though we do have a site it’s currently not active, but incase you want to get it here I will be offering on my site as well.

Our First episode was a great success and we talked about nano tech to the robberies at the Apple Store, even if you feel you have to many podcasts and you don’t want to have to listen to another one. I would request that you listen to it and give us any advice, and tell us where we went wrong. You can do this either in the comment or email us – thanks for reading, and listening!

Exclusive Download: Dine-O-Matic 2

Anyone who’s spent time in any major city will have inevitably run into the age-old conundrum of where and what to eat when they feel like going out. Chinese or Pizza? If you’re going to do something Asian, why not that new Thai place? Even the most decisive of folks can be turned into blubbering infants when faced with so many options. Things only get worse when you’re eating with others. Steve likes Italian, but Joe really wants a Burger. Inevitably, someone isn’t going to get their way, creating a rift between friends that will lie dormant until sometime in the future when it leads to the two of them never speaking to each other again. What we really need is an impartial Solomonic arbiter to assist us in these difficult decisions. Some kind of automated computing machine, perhaps…

Okay, so maybe choosing a place to eat isn’t all that hard, but the upcoming Dine-O-Matic 2 from the Iconfactory can certainly add some spice to the otherwise boring weekday decision. Simply enter in the names and other information of your frequent haunts, and Dine-O-Matic does the rest– presenting you with a random choice of eatery at the click of your mouse. The addition of custom cuisine categories and the ability to add additional “weight” to your favorites are just a few of the upgrades to this already terrific widget.

Full changes include:
• Custom cuisine categories
• Enable / disable entire categories
• Expanded restaurant information
• Restaurant price filtering
• ‘Weight’ your favorite restaurants
• Google Maps and web integration
• Localized for these languages:
• German
• French
• Japanese
• Swedish
• Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)

Although version 2 officially goes public tomorrow, we’ve got it a day early exclusively for readers of PhillRyu.com. Check it out, and enjoy!

Skype letter from CEO

This is a letter from the CEO of Skype regarding Skype being down.

Hello everyone,

It’s been a very hectic few days around Skype but I am really pleased to say that since the early hours of Saturday morning Skype has been back to normal. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big, heart-felt thank you to all our users who contacted us with messages of support. It’s the little things that make all the difference in a crisis. We’re very sorry that Skype was unavailable because we know how much people enjoy using it. But we’re back now and we’re stronger. For more information about what happened, please take a look at our Heartbeat blog. In the meantime, thank you to everyone again – you make the Skype community what it is today.

CEO, Skype

Tech Today!

My good friend Jonathan Davies, and I will be starting a new podcast called Tech Today. Tech Today is a podcast about technology at the moment! Our first episode will be on Wednesday, August 22, 2007!

About the hosts

Jonathan Davis:

Anyway, I’m an easy going sort of guy but slightly impatient with others (mainly if they have an  inability to use a computer!!!) Some of my “non-tech” related hobbies include:

  • Sailing
  • Reading
  • Hockey
  • Rugby
  • Earning Money

I’m quite a determined person and sometimes very opinionated, but when I set myself a target I like to see it through till the end.

Daniel Brusilovsky:

I am a sophomore at Aragon High School. I am in the Jazz Ensemble, playing the drums, and in the Symphonic Band. I love computers. I am the Co-President of the technology club, Mousesquad. I love Apple Computers and technology in general! I went to the MacWorld Conference in Downtown San Francisco in 2007 and I went to Google, Inc. HQ in Mountain View in April. I love making podcasts.

I hope you enjoy Tech Today!

Mac Mini in a Corvette

After our little scare with the Mac Mini last week, the little boxen that could is quickly becoming my favorite computer (still can’t wait to get one with Leopard on it). So seeing cool applications of it like this one thrills me to no end: Andrew sent us his writeup of putting a Mac Mini into a Corvette (complete with touchscreen monitor) as a music player.

Mac Mini in a Corvette

The whole process looks pretty complicated to me– the most I’ve done with my car stereo is install an old CD player, and by install I mean “watched my friend do it.” But Andrew’s writeup is really thorough, and he goes through everything from choosing components to creating a layout, to potential problems during installation, and what he plans to do next. Apparently the Mini is almost tailormade for car systems like this– not only is there a special cable built to power it in the car, but there is even a special version of Front Row designed to be controlled from a touchscreen. Not everything worked well, however– the Mini had a grounding problem, apparently, and Andrew had an issue with the Mini’s volume setting reverting after a restart, but he was able to punch out an Applescript to fix it.

The end product looks great– Andrew says he’s still working on the mounts, but considering he’s got a working touchscreen controlling a Mac Mini in his Corvette, that’s good enough for me. Very nice.

Skype comes to iPhone via IM+

Shape Services on Monday announced IM+ for Skype for iPhone, a Web application that enables iPhone users to access the Skype messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) network.

IM+ for Skype for iPhone follows the release of similar software for other mobile platforms like BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian and J2ME devices. The software taps in to your Skype account, enabling you to make voice calls using SkypeOut credits. The application works on any network, according to Shape, and doesn’t specifically require Wi-Fi.
